In this ReadWriteThink lesson, students use a book from "The American Girls" series to learn about the characteristics of historical fiction and slavery during the Civil War. Students explore the life and times of the era. They learn how to visualize and infer events from the author's choice of words and refine their comprehension by examining the text. This lesson incorporates student interactive Web sites and resources. Several pieces of literature appropriate for use with this lesson are suggested.
