Great, engaging lesson // Erica Rood

In my fourth grade class, I used Fun with Baseball Stats, to extend and enrich students who showed mastery in Number Sense standard 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 and Measurement and Geometry standard 2.0. The small group of boys were so enthusiastic to work on this project, especially because it involved something they love- Baseball! Once they completed the chart, they had so much fun playing the game. My students were able to work independently for the game portion of the lesson but needed a little guidance with getting started. Overall, I think this lesson would work very well with high-achieving 4th grade students, even though it's meant for students in grades 6-8.

Description

In this lesson, from Illuminations, students explore statistics surrounding baseball, and are exposed to connections between various mathematical concepts. They learn the meaning of the statistics found on baseball cards and convert baseball card information into appropriate decimals, fractions, and percents. They then play a simulated game of baseball.
