This lesson, from ReadWriteThink, comprises a series of activities in which students are introduced to the GIST summarizing strategy. They read newspaper articles obtained from newspaper Web sites and identify journalism's "5Ws and H" (who, what, where, when, why, and how). Finally, they complete a template using information they found in the articles and use their notes to write a 20-word summary called a GIST.
