Summer 2008-This easy-to-read article asserts that when guidelines and practices about ELL are discussed, they need to be based on solid research about effective practices for teaching ELLs. Goldenberg suggests that readers may be surprised to discover how little is actually known in this area. The four goals of the article are as follows: 1) to engage in debates about ELL from a knowledgeable position; 2) to encourage and support more ELL research and funding for ELL research; 3) to minimize the proliferation of false claims about ELL; 4) to disseminate what has been reasonably well established in the field of ELL.
