Description

This resource, from the Illuminations-reviewed History of Mathematics Archive, features biographical information about American mathematician Winifred Edgerton Merrill. Merrill was the first American woman to obtain a Ph.D. in mathematics. Her work in the field of mathematical astronomy included the computation of the orbit of a comet in 1883, and she opened the door for other women to pursue study in the field of mathematics.
