Description

Reviewed for grades 6-8 by Illuminations, estimation and measurement are the major concepts of this activiy. Students are shown two different irregular-shaped cookies that are covered with equal amounts of chocolate. They are then asked which one they would prefer if they wanted the one with the most chocolate. To solve the problem students have to estimate the area of each cookie and decide which has the largest area. There are several ways that students could estimate the area, such as drawing each figure onto graph paper and counting the number of squares in each. This would be a good initial or follow up problem for a lesson on measurement. There are also other interesting facts through the "Think About This" and "Did You Know" sections. Less
