Description

This resource, part of the America's Story Web site from the Library of Congress, provides an image of a slave auction similar to that held to sell off Pierce Butler's slaves. Over two days, Butler auctioned off the human portion of his property to help pay off his debts. It was the largest sale of slaves on record in the United States, and it was referred to as "The Weeping Time." This resource is referenced in the EDSITEment lesson titled "The Lives of African-Americans: A Debate Against Slavery." Less
