Performance Reviews

Description
Overview:
Performance Reviews are the formal process of evaluating and
documenting the performance of an employee. They are
typically conducted as a one-on-one conversation between an
employee and their supervisor or a quarterly or annual basis.
The review is often connected to the employee’s compensation
and position within the company. The reviews are given by managers
to employees for each tier of the organizational structure.
That is, for example, in a three-tiered organization, senior
managers would review unit managers, and unit managers would review
line employees.
Conducted as part of a sequence of lessons, this lesson requires
the completion of the

Goal Setting lesson to establish individual employee goals,
which are incorporated into the employee job description generated

Descriptions and Company Hierarchy lesson. Along with
portions of the Business Plan, these lessons form the
operational back-bone of the organization’s plan, which
aligns individual employee behavior to meet the
organization’s goals.
If the class is working on a business simulation project, the
reviews should be conducted as part of the normal operations of the
project, with students acting their roles in the project as
supervisors and employees. The reviews should be conducted at
appropriate intervals to the objectives of the course, so that at
least two review cycles are conducted. This repetition gives
the opportunity for comparison of progress from one cycle to the
next. The lesson may also be conducted as a stand-alone lesson by
replacing the business objectives with the objectives of an overall
class or major class assignment; students can take turns acting the
role of the supervisor or the employee. The assignment should
have already been completed so that there is material to
evaluate.
Objectives:
Students will experience a workplace coaching and performance
evaluation, gain greater clarity on their job performance, and
improve their performance going forward. Many organizations do not
give adequate time to performance review; a secondary objective of
the lesson is to model “healthy” relationships between
supervisor and employee which leads to “healthy”
organizational culture.
Preparation and materials:
Prepare a sample review with one student in advance. If
this is a business simulation project, the teacher should review
the leader (CEO) of the business; since the leader reports to the
teacher, to demonstrate that all employees performance is reviewed,
and for the leader to demonstrate leadership ;-).
