Description
This "Figure This!" activity, reviewed for grades 3-5 by Illuminations, challenges students to investigate gas mileage for different cars. Although these students are too young to drive, they are not too young to evaluate the economics of driving. In order to make a reasonable claim as to which car is better, students have to evaluate the gas mileage in regards to highway and city mileage. Thus, students will most likely need to set up tables to analyze the data. The Getting Started section leads the students in the right direction for exploring this problem, and the following section presents the answer with the calculated data in the form of a table. Subsequent problems also call for the D=RT formula and data analysis.
