Description

The site describes a card game, reviewed for grades 3-5 by Illuminations, that is similar to "war" but instead of using a regular deck of cards, the players use cards that have a mixture of decimals, fractions, and percentages. (The teacher will have to construct the cards.) The teacher can choose to make the game more difficult by not including all three representations of the value on a card. The game itself may help students understand the concepts of equality and inequality among decimals, fractions, and percents. And, students may practice with the visualization of the numbers as well as practice deciding on the most efficient representation of a number to use for various situations. An alternative version of the game provides students with the opportunity to indirectly use reasoning regarding probability. Students make guesses on the value of a number being drawn from the deck as being higher, lower, or in-between two previously drawn cards by the nature of those cards. For example, a student may conclude that it is more likely to draw a card of a greater value than 1/3 or 1/5 (the two previously drawn cards) than it is to draw one of a lesser or in-between value. These games may be a fun way for students to become more familiar with various representations of the same number. Less
