This is map is from the title page of the survey of the coal fields of the Kanawha River valley in West Virginia; this map shows the location of the mines with a cross-sectional map accompanying. It is found on the American Memory Project's Map Collection website. The historic and more recent maps contained in this section show early exploration and subsequent land use in various areas of the United States and elsewhere. These maps show the changes in the landscape, including natural and man-made features, recreational and wilderness areas, geology, topography, wetland area, vegetation, and wildlife.
