Description

This hands-on role-playing activity, reviewed for grades 3-5 by Illumination, uses a story about one possible origin of place value. The activity encourages teachers to allow students to use manipulatives (such as rice or M&M's) to discover the concept of and need for place value. The students form a good understanding of place value and the base-ten number system because they are actually working with it. The students may also form an understanding of why we have a decimal system. The entire class can participate in this activity. For the higher-level grades, there are additional activities that can be done with this lesson. Historical facts are provided that may also be interesting for the students. Also, there is a link to an online activity for students to experiment with Base 10 Blocks. Less
