Description
This page provides three labs, reviewed for grades 9-12 by Illuminations, that teachers can use to help their students build important conceptual foundations for formal geometry related to angles. The first two labs involve the use of pattern blocks. In the first, students explore angle measure by placing different combinations of pattern blocks around a point calculating the angle measures of each. In the second, students explore angles of polygons by writing instructions on how to "walk" the shape of the polygon. The third lab is more advanced, and involves the use of the circle geoboard. In this lab, students explore various types of triangles inscribed in a circle, and formulate ways to find the measure of the angles without using a protractor.
All of these labs should be useful for helping students to understand angle measure and the properties of various geometric figures. One of the strengths of these investigations is that they use manipulatives, allowing students to experience the concepts. Students are also called on to formulate their own generalizations and methods for determining angle measure. These labs take more than one period to complete; in fact, depending on how much discussion time is included, they could take up to three periods. Less
