Description

This lesson plan, reviewed for grades 3-5 by Illuminations, is designed to encourage students to think about the perimeter of rectangles and the relationship between area and perimeter. The lesson revolves around a problem in which a farmer needs to build a pen from 30 m of fencing. Students are asked to think about the possibilities, construct five different possibilities while labeling the area and perimeter of each, and then decide which pen would be the most appropriate. Since grid paper is provided, students will likely construct rectangles, and so the activity should help students to think about the connection between the area and perimeter of a rectangle. (However, the largest rectangle meeting the conditions will likely elude them, since it will be a 7.5 m. square.) To evaluate the lesson, students are asked to write letters to the farmer explaining their findings. A rubric is provided at the bottom of the lesson for the teacher. Less
