Description

Explore 20th-century invention and the textile industry with seven learning activities in this unit from the Smithsonian Institution's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. The unit combines history, marketing and economics, science process, chemistry, math, and sociology to provide a context for the development and commercial success of the synthetic fiber, nylon. A variety of learning goals, including an overall concept of the process of invention, a realistic perception of the role of scientists, and the role consumers play in new technology, are explored through a movie, reading, scientific experiments and experiential learning. Use of historical documents and the role of women in the history of technology and invention are emphasized. This unit is referenced in the Science NetLinks Science Update "The Grooviest of Fabrics."
