Description

In this game-like activity, reviewed for grades 6-8 by Illuminations, students are asked to combine the digits 1-9 (given on star-shaped cards) using operations and grouping symbols to form various numbers (1,000 and up). In addition to building their problem solving skills, the students receive plenty of work with numbers along the way! Not only will they get practice with computations, but they will also need to work on order of operations. An extension is given, based on the book "How Much is a Million," where they are asked to estimate how long it would take to draw a million stars. This activity is presented as a PDF file, which requires Adobe Acrobat software; the software can be downloaded free from the Adobe Web site. Less
