Description
In this online exhibition from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, students will explore the impact of containerization on the commercial shipping industry. Containerization streamlined freight handling, slashed the cost of transporting cargoes of all kinds, and made imported goods cheaper. The transformation to container ships dramatically changed the work of longshoremen and necessitated the adaptation of ports. This resource includes a five minute video entitled: Waterfront Transformed: Containerization and the Working Lives of Longshoremen. In this video, retired Longshoremen describe how their work and lives were changed by the container revolution. Less
