In this online exhibition from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, students will examine the origins and impact of the suburban strip mall. By moving commercial life out of the central business districts, suburban strips contributed to the economic decline of downtowns. As more people moved into the suburbs, the strips also became centers of social life. As more people moved into the suburbs, these shopping centers also became centers of social life.
