Description

In this ReadWriteThink lesson, students analyze the poem "Blackberry Picking" by Seamus Heaney by listing examples of imagery, diction and figurative language. Looking for patterns within their lists, they "lump" them into categories and apply these categories to the poem's structure to determine meaning. Students are then able to write theme statements and support them with specifics gleaned from the poem.
