Description
This presentation was part of a 1997 symposium at AMNH designed to help understand human involvement in extinction. Niles Eldredge argues that the current biodiversity crisis, or "the Sixth Extinction," is a product of human population size and the unequal distribution of wealth on the planet. His presentation discusses how our perspective on the resonance between extinction and evolution has changed enormously over the past 20 or 30 years and his belief that by stepping out of our local ecosystems and becoming part of the global system, humans have helped bring about the sixth extinction.
