Description

This winning entry in the Museum's Young Naturalist Awards 2004 by Emily, a 17 year old student from Maine, investigates the common periwinkle. Her narrative essay (with photographs, illustrations, charts, and references) includes background information about the variety and diversity of marine snails and an overview of the common periwinkle and the role it plays in the ecology of the Maine shore. She reports on her findings which suggest that in order for morphologic variation among sites to be effectively compared, periwinkles' intertidal position must be taken into account and provides details about her methods and the materials she used for her studies.
