Description

This site provides information on a USDA research project. The primary objective of this project, a teaching and demonstration garden, is to provide hands-on teaching and demonstrations to grade school-age children, elders, the USDA Tribal Food Service Center, and other residents of the reservation. The primary teaching and demonstration efforts will target knowing native plants of the Americas; planting and establishing plants of the Americas; understanding garden vegetable culture and production practices; and understanding the nutritional value of plants of the Americas. The final objective is to promote and foster an effort toward in situ conservation of the native plant species used by the Nez Perce Tribe for traditional foods and to collaborate on the conservation approach and possibly acquire samples for ex situ conservation.
