Description

This site provides an introduction to the history of scientific cosmology: the study of the universe, its contents, structure, and evolution from the beginning of time to the future. The topics are arranged into two categories, "Ideas" and "Tools." "Ideas" begins with the Greek worldview (Plato, Aristotle, Ptolemy), early scientific cosmology (the heliocentric system, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler), and continues through modern cosmological debates (the Big Bang versus a steady-state universe) and new ideas (the role of particle physics). "Tools" chronicles the development and use of observational tools, from the naked eye through optical telescopes, spectroscopes, and newer tools such as radio telescopes, X-ray and Gamma-ray detectors, and other nonoptical instruments.
