I teach a middle school SDC class. I attempt to use the general
education curriculum as much as possible. Most publishers offer
special education resources that modify the standardized curriculum
and make the materials accessible for special education students
for free with the implementation of their text books on campus. I
am curious as to what curriculum other special education teachers
use and what resources they have.
I use the text and then develop activities to role-play the concept as much as possible. I also use activity-based instruction with Hands On Heritage which is available in most teacher supply stores for 5th and 6th grade Social studies.
In the Los Angeles County Office of Education, we use the Adaptive Core Curriculum, which is adapted from the Standards based curriculum used in the general education classes. In addition to the Adaptive Core Curriculum, teachers are creating visual adaptations for use with the autism population, to assist with their auditory processing.
We are an elementary school district and use the Core curriculum for the Iep goals based on the California standards, plus many different reading intervention curriculums. Some of the reading intervention curriculums used by teachers are Phonics for Reading, Early Reading Interventions, Corrective Reading, Reading Mastery, Rewards, Read 180, etc.
