Although the official application time has passed, each year the National Writing Project hosts a summer institute for teachers in the area of writing. It's an awesome program that takes one month to complete, but you will gain a wealth of knowledge and come out as a Teacher Consultant. Check it out on their website. There are several areas in California that offer this institute. The area between South Lake Tahoe and Fairfield is called Area3, so check out your area and look into it. You won't be disappointed!
I agree with Heather. The A3WP Summer Institute has revolutionalized my teaching.

Does anyone know of summer institutes that are available to teachers in or out of California and can post their information for our review. I am interested in the core subjects but also technology, writing etc. Thank you.
Have you ever taken part in the California Science Project? They have regional groups and I was involved in one that took place for two weeks each summer up here at Chico State. It is a great way to meet fellow science teachers and learn cutting-edge techniques to bring to the classroom. Here's their website: http://csmp.ucop.edu/
