As Jaquelin stated, Ning now has a fee attached to it. I myself have 2 Twitter accounts that I never use. I got on the band wagon, but never really did anything with them. I am currently trying to find a way for my wife to use it.
We want to set her up so she can Tweet about updates made to grades, assignments due, and upcoming assessments. The only problem I see is getting her students to get signed up. Grated many of them probably already have one and are using it to some degree. (Telling the world how there day is going every five minutes.)
Since much of what I do has to be done in class, I don't really give homework. My students already get enough from other subjects. This is the main reason I haven't used Twitter.
How are some of you using it? (This might have to be another thread.)
Twitter has a huge educator following on various levels. The most popular forum has been the hashtag #edchat on Twitter. Thousands of educators discuss issues in education and share resources/links/lessons via Twitter hashtags such as #edtech #ntchat #EduIT #education. It has evolved from telling what you are doing every 5 minutes, to an actual place for connecting and engaging with other educators around the world. Here is the link to #edchat http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23edchat
Once educators start logging in, joining the discussions, commenting, “favorite-ing” resources and really connecting/collaborating with one another it could easily live up to its “Facebook for Teachers” tagline … the value truly lies in what we put into it.
While I am happy to see the state build a platform for CA educators to share and connect, I wonder how it will compete with the already huge educator following created on Twitter and other social networking sites such as Ning. I potentially see this useful for school sites that block Twitter and Ning. Any other CA educators on here who use Twitter who may see value on this platform that isn't already offered? I am new to the site and will explore further...Thanks!
BTW, I will share this new site with all my teachers...
Thank you for visiting this site and sharing this with your teachers!
Like Twitter and Facebook, BoE offers social networking for teachers. In addition, the BoE site also offers an extensive repository of teaching resources, lesson plans, professional development, and California Standards aligned content. So rather than having to go out to the web and search for content that is suitable for the classroom, you can search for it here This site has been crafted by the input of teachers that have tested this site, anything that they could think of has had immense consideration and added to the site. If there is anything that we can improve on this site or any great ideas are greatly appreciated, feel free to contact BoE on the contact page. BoE is always looking for ways to create a great site for teachers statewide.
Looking at Ning, I see that they charge a fee to create a community, BoE is available to all California Educators at no cost.

I hope that you find BoE a very useful tool.

I think you hit it on the head. Hopefully MYBOE won't be blocked...

If you received your confirmation email from myboe.org, your school site has not blocked it.
