CCSS Grades 6–12 ELA/Literacy Instruction Emerging Practices Videos

The following classroom videos feature emerging practices for instruction aligned to the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy), grades six through twelve (6–12). We have provided a few things to look for while you watch the video in order to draw your attention to some of these emerging practices in action. These videos are not meant to set a standard for evaluation of instructional practice, but, instead, provide a visual companion to state-level guidance and demonstrate what instruction aligned to the CA CCSS might look like. 1

A Note-taking Guide (DOC) is provided to help you consider the practices shared in the videos. You may want to review it before watching the videos and print it or have it open on your desktop to have in front of you while you watch.

Things to Look For

  1. Notice how the lesson requires students to go in depth with a complex text.
  2. Notice how the two questions guiding the lesson require students to use evidence to support arguments.
  3. Notice the classroom routines, norms, structures, and rules the teacher puts in place to support the success of the lesson.
  4. Notice how the teacher draws attention to academic language and register.
  5. Notice the variety of opportunities provided to students to engage in the lesson.
  6. Notice how the collaborative conversations students engage in enhances their reading comprehension.
  7. Notice how students are encouraged to listen to, question, and critique each other’s assertions.
  8. Notice the amount of scaffolding used by the teacher to ensure all students are meeting the learning objectives.
  9. Notice how students are encouraged to identify and discuss the author’s purpose and language.
  10. Notice how the teacher checks for student understanding and adjusts instruction based on this.
  11. Notice how students are asked to write a text with a specific format and to a specific audience that requires evidence to support an assertion.
  12. Notice how students are encouraged to reflect on their learning and how it will support them in the future.
