There are several resources and tools available to consider the question: What steps can I take to effectively engage the community to support CA CCSS implementation? Below is a collection of resources for further exploration to support instructional leaders in their ongoing professional learning.

  • CCSS Communications Campaign
    Core California education partners, including the Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation and the California Department of Education, collaborate to provide and coordinate communications tools and resources to build awareness and support for the transition to the CA CCSS.
  • Explaining the Common Core to Californians Toolkit
    A collection of framing research, recommendations, and sample communications designed to help California instructional leaders increase public understanding of the kinds of instruction, assessment, and systemic supports needed to fulfill the potential of the CA CCSS.
  • CAASPP Communications Toolkit
    The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Communications Toolkit is a link to Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment resources, including communications and key informational documents to inform schools, families, and community representatives about online summative testing.
  • CDE Communications Toolkit (DOC)
    The CCSS Systems Implementation Communications Toolkit for California is designed to help local educational agencies with the important task of informing and engaging school communities about what the CA CCSS will mean for them.
  • CCSESA Common Core Standards Communications Tools
    These materials were developed for use by county superintendents to disseminate information about the CA CCSS, including general overview materials and a parent handbook (available in multiple languages) and materials regarding assessments, mathematics, English language arts, and international benchmarking.

    • California Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations
      Describes research and evidence-based expectations for the way most infants and toddlers make progress in the major domains of social-emotional, language, cognitive, and perceptual and motor development.
    • California Preschool Learning Foundations
      Outlines key knowledge and skills that most children can achieve when provided with the kinds of interactions, instruction, and environments that research has shown to promote early learning and development.
    • Alignment of the Preschool Learning Foundations
      Provides an in-depth analysis of how the nine domains of the preschool foundations closely align with the California Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations, the CA CCSS, and the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework.

    • Letter from UC, CSU, CCC, and AICCU Leaders
      In this letter to the State Board of Education, leaders of the University of California system, the California State University system, the California Community Colleges, and the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities outline their endorsement of the CA CCSS and their support for continuous collaboration between K–12 and higher education.

    Answers to frequently asked questions about CA CCSS implementation concerning background, professional learning, curriculum frameworks and instructional materials, assessment, resources, career and college readiness, and technology.
  • CAASPP Communication FAQs About Smarter Balanced
    Addresses common questions that are asked about the Smarter Balanced Assessments including how they were developed and what the tests measure.
  • California PTA CCSS Web Page
    The California State PTA has made available many resources for parents to learn more about the CA CCSS and support their child's achievement of the standards. Resources include informational fliers, frequently asked questions, grade level parents' guides, links to additional resources, and articles of interest. The fliers and parents' guides are available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
  • Council of Great City Schools Parent Roadmaps
    The Council of Great City Schools has developed parent roadmaps for understanding the ELA and mathematics CCSS in kindergarten through high school. For each grade and subject, the roadmaps explain to parents what children will be learning and how parents can support learning outside of the classroom.
  • CSBA CCSS Web Page
    The California School Boards Association (CSBA) has produced a number of resources to assist governance teams as they implement the CA CCSS in their district or county office of education.
  • Chamber of Commerce Smarter Balanced Flyer (PDF)
    This informational flyer was developed by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives in collaboration with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium to inform the business community about what the Smarter Balanced assessment system will mean for them.
