Perspectives on Promoting Mathematical Discourse

The Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools promotes it. So do the NCTM Standards. What is it? Student communication! The ability to communicate in a variety of forms is a critical part of the learning process. So why doesn't everybody make sure it's happening in the classroom? Because it is harder than it looks-- it requires structuring the learning environment so that it supports high-quality communication about mathematics.
