Thinking About the Graph

Do you remember the activity "Stacking Cups? from module 5.1" At one point, the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable was discussed.

  • Independent Variable -- a variable which can be assigned any permissible value without any restriction imposed by any other variable.
  • Dependent Variable -- a variable has its value determined by the choice of value(s) of other variable(s).

Will Ms. England's students be able to distinguish between these two terms? See how she guides them toward understanding in the following video clip.

Classroom Clip Reflection:

  • What types of questions does Ms. England ask to help her students identify the dependent and independent variables?
  • What other questions might she have asked? How would she determine whether or not all students in the group understand the difference between these concepts?
  • What questions would you have asked?
