Instructional Strategies

During this module, Ms. England utilized a variety of instructional strategies to help her students understand the concepts of slope, y-intercepts, rate of change, linear relationships and the relationship of slope and parallel lines.

This next section analyzes some the instructional strategies modeled by Ms. England during her lessons on linear relationships, and in some cases, adds additional descriptions and details about the strategy and allows you to see additional modeling of the strategy being used with students.

In this section, we will be focusing on these specific strategies:

  • Stimulating student engagement while setting up a mathematical task.
  • Organizing materials and students for hands-on mathematical tasks.
  • Using strategic questioning to further students' thinking.
  • Using multiple representations to facilitate development of conceptual understanding.
  • Using cooperative learning to facilitate student reasoning and mathematical discourse.
