Integrated & Designated English Language Development (ELD):
Working in Tandem

Integrated ELD: All teachers with English learners in their classrooms use the CA ELD Standards throughout in tandem with the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and other content standards.

 

 

Designated ELD: A protected time during the day when teachers use the CA ELD Standards as the focal standards in ways that build into and from content instruction.

In “integrated ELD,” all teachers with English learners in their classrooms use the CA ELD Standards in tandem with their CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and other content standards to provide a world-class education for all students. In “designated ELD,” teachers use the CA ELD Standards as the focal standards in order to support their English learners to develop English — with a particular focus on academic English — in ways that build into and from content instruction.
