1.3 Organization of the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy

As mentioned in the “Literacy in other Disciplines” video from section 1.1, the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy include a section devoted specifically to standards for literacy in the content areas. The following chart, with corresponding abbreviations and page numbers, will help you understand the organization of the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy.  The standards for literacy in the content areas are listed in the right column.

The chart demonstrates the parallel relationship between the standards for English Language Arts and the standards for literacy in the content areas.  For all content areas there are ten standards for reading and ten standards for writing.  However, in grades 6–12 the standards are differentiated to address the discipline specific needs of the content areas.  At the same time, while there are no Speaking and Listening or Language Standards specified by content area, content area teachers can still help students develop these skills.

This module will focus on examining the literacy standards specifically related to history/social studies, particularly those in reading. Download both sections of the standards, as follows, to use throughout the module.
