1.2.1 The College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standards

Each grade level standard is based on the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standards that are the same for all grades and content areas. The CCR Anchor Standards define the literacy expectations for students entering college and careers, and provide the foundation for the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy.

You will find these CCR Anchor Standards at the beginning of each ELA strand. You may also download this CCR Anchor Standards reference sheet

Time to Try

Using the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy that you downloaded in the previous section, take a few minutes to explore the relationship between the CCR Anchor Standards and the individual grade-level standards in the task that follows.

Comparing Standards Activity

  1. Turn to the CCR Anchor Standards for Reading (p. 10) and examine Standard 6.
    1. Examine the same standard in the Reading Standards for Informational Text K–5 (pp. 14–15) for your grade and those before and after it.
  2. Turn to the CCR Anchor Standards for Writing (p. 20) and examine Standard 1
    1. Examine the same standard in the Writing Standards K–5 (pp. 21–22) for your grade and those before and after it.
  3. Turn to the CCR Anchor Standards for Speaking and Listening (p. 26) and examine Standard 3.
    1. Examine the same standard in the Speaking and Listening Standards K–5 (pp. 27–29) for your grade and those adjacent to it.
