1.7 Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies 6–12

The CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy expect that elementary teachers will use the standards with content area curriculum to build students’ literacy skills while developing their content knowledge at the same time. By grade 6, the CA CCSS include strands for literacy in history/social studies as well as for science and technical subjects. By integrating the CA CCSS across content areas, elementary teachers will help prepare students to meet those strands. The Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects 6–12 (Standards for Literacy):

  • Complement rather than replace content standards in those subjects
  • Emphasize the necessity for literacy to become a shared responsibility of all teachers in all content areas
  • Are aligned with college and career readiness expectations
