Module Overview

Module Purpose

The primary purpose of this module is to provide kindergarten through grade five (K–5) classroom teachers with information, resources, and strategies to implement the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and
Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical
Subjects (CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy) in the history/social studies
curriculum. The CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy expect that
elementary teachers will use the standards with content
area curriculum to build students’ literacy skills while developing
content knowledge and disciplinary skills. By integrating the standards
across content areas, elementary teachers will help prepare
students to meet those strands.


 

Overarching Module Goals:

  • Understand the intent and organization of the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and how to implement the standards through history/social studies curriculum.
  • Understand how building literacy in history/social studies K–5 improves learning and prepares students for addressing the Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Grades Six through Twelve (6-12) and college, career, and civic life.
  • Understand the implications of literacy instruction in history/social studies.
  • Understand how to support the learning of all students.

  • Unit 3: Literacy Upper Elementary History/Social Studies
  • Unit 4: Assessing Student Writing in History/Social Studies K–5
