2.0 Using the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy: An Early Elementary History/Social Studies Example

When developing lessons in the content areas, it is important to focus the lesson on addressing the relevant content standards while using the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy to develop students’ literacy skills through that content. The example lesson for this unit focuses on the following history-social science standards for grade 1:

History-Social Science Content Standards for California Public Schools
1.1. Students describe the rights and individual responsibilities of citizenship.
1.1.2 Understand the elements of…respect for rules by which we live…

To effectively meet these content standards—and to access and master increasingly complex history/social studies texts including the textbook—teachers must also focus on developing students’ literacy skills using close reading activities¸ critical thinking, effective speaking, and expository writing activities.
