Unit 2: Making it Real: Classroom Examples

LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR UNIT 2

  • Reflect on your classroom instruction to identify the literacy skills and strategies you are already teaching and how these skills and strategies compare with those defined in the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy.
  • Watch a science lesson in which student learning is supported by the integration of science hands-on activities with the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy.
  • Engage in the following activities:
    • Identify the impact of integrating literacy and science standards on student thinking
    • Identify strategies for speaking and listening incorporating academic language and science vocabulary
    • Identify science notebook writing activities that develop student skills in writing that are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
    • Identify strategies for reading complex text to enhance student understanding of science content

 


In this unit, you will have an opportunity to view segments of multi-day grade-level science lessons that integrate literacy strategies for speaking and listening, writing, and reading to increase student understanding of the science content. Keep in mind that the grade-level science lessons and their accompanying videos provide examples of how the integration of literacy and science may occur. These classroom teachers, like you, are on the pathway of incorporating the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy into their science classroom practice.
