Learning Sequence

Take a moment to analyze the grade 5 teacher’s planning for student learning. Her planning includes identifying the conceptual flow of the science content and aligning specific CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy to increase student understanding of that content. This planning allows the teacher to select and use multiple standards across several days of instruction with appropriate scaffolding. 

The teacher developed a seven-day learning sequence in which she wanted her students to understand that metals have properties by which the metals can be identified, such as:

  • Being shiny, malleable, and ductile;
  • Having the ability to conduct heat and electricity;
  • And, in some cases, the ability to be magnetic.

She wanted her students to discover these properties by experimentation, discussion, writing, and reading.
