The CA ELD Standards

The overview of the CA ELD Standards states that the new standards describe the key knowledge, skills, and abilities in core areas of English language development that students learning English need to know to achieve college and career readiness as described in the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy. In order to engage with and reach understanding of grade-level academic content, English learners must have access to the content-area knowledge and skills: The CA ELD Standards are not intended to replace the Common Core State Standards for ELA but instead to amplify the language knowledge, skills and abilities of those Common Core State Standards that are critical in order for ELs to simultaneously be successful in school while they are developing English.”

As you look at the standards for your grade level, you will see that the two sets of standards differ in some ways but closely correspond in others. Notice where the communicative modes of the CA ELD Standards, Collaborative, Interpretive, and Productive correspond to the CA CCSS for Speaking and Listening and Language? The authors of the CA ELD Standards also included a third column in Part I in which they list the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy that correspond to each CA ELD standard.
