Writing in Science

Science exists because scientists are writers and speakers (Montgomery, 2003); results are peer-reviewed and published adding to the existing body of knowledge that we call science. Science is not only about “what and how,” but it is also about the communication of what was done, how it was done and what was learned. In other words, scientists “do" science and "write" science.

Scientists use observational and procedural writing, create data tables and charts, graph information, write summary statements, develop explanations including claims, evidence, and reasoning, (W5.1, W5.4, W5.9) and writing informational reports (W5.2, W5.4, W5.9). Teaching these types of writing within the context of science aligns with the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy.
