Building Academic Language

Building academic language, including academic vocabulary (L.9-10.6), is an important result of productive classroom discussion. Research suggests that if students are going to grasp and retain new language, they need incremental, repeated exposure to the vocabulary in a variety of activities-science investigations/experiments, reading, writing, and discussion. When students experience vocabulary in these contexts, they develop a nuanced and flexible understanding of vocabulary, including the definition and the context in which the word is used.
