Learning Sequence

Take a moment to analyze the high school teacher’s planning for student learning. His planning includes identifying the conceptual flow of the science content and aligning specific CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and science content standards to increase student understanding. The teacher plans to teach multiple CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy standards across several days of instruction with appropriate scaffolding.

The high school teacher developed a five-day learning sequence in which he wanted his students to understand and practice balancing chemical equations and how this mathematical tool relates to the principle of conservation of matter. Key learning for Students in the learning sequence included being able to identify five different chemical reactions and their associated chemical equations. The teacher engaged students in classroom discussion, writing, and reading.
