Building Academic Language

Building academic vocabulary (L1.6) is an important result of productive classroom discussion. Research suggests that if students are going to grasp and retain new academic vocabulary they need incremental, repeated exposure to the vocabulary in a variety of activities such as science investigations or experiments, reading, writing, and discussion. When students experience vocabulary in these contexts, they develop a nuanced and flexible understanding of a word, its definition, and the context in which the word is used.
