Supporting All Students in California’s Assessment System

CAASPP legislation specifies inclusive practices and checks for fairness when assessing English learners and students with disabilities.

The department [CDE] will develop a three-year plan of activities, with the approval of the state board, supporting the continuous improvement of the assessments….Activities may include, but not necessarily be limited to, a variety of internal and external studies such as validity studies, alignment studies, and studies evaluating test fairness, testing accommodations, testing policies, and reporting procedures, and consequential validity studies specific to pupil populations such as English learners and pupils with disabilities.”

Accessibility is a core principle of the Smarter Balanced development process, using technology to deliver assessments that fit the needs of individual students. Assessment items and performance tasks will be associated with a variety of accessibility tools and accommodations that can be delivered to students automatically based on their identified needs.
