Categorizing Different Types of Assessments

One common way of categorizing the different types of assessments used to meet the information needs of key stakeholders in the educational system is to distinguish between summative and formative assessment processes.  The distinction between the two processes is based on the purpose of the assessment and on how the information from the assessment is to be used rather than on the content or administration of the assessment.
