Unit 1: Understanding and Teaching the Common Core Writing Standards

1.1 What Students Need to Do, Know, and Understand

How do the CCR Anchor Standards for Writing set the expectations for what students write and how are the standards interrelated and interdependent?

Time to Read

All grade level expectations in the CCSS are based on the CCR Anchor Standards. For your first activity, you will examine the ten CCR Anchor Standards for Writing, noting what students need to know and understand to successfully meet the requirements of each standard. You may download a copy of the anchor standards to mark up, or view each standard through the links below and take notes.

Review the standards two times as follows:

  1. On the first reading, note phrases that describe what students need to do in their writing.
  2. Read through each standard again and note what students need to know and understand to successfully meet the requirements of each standard.
