Unit 1: Teaching and Learning the Standards for Mathematical Practice

Doing and Using Mathematics

Picture of three students working The processes and proficiencies provided the basis for the development of the SMP; ways of thinking and doing that lead to successful learning of mathematics content.

Expertise with these practices emerges over time from opportunities and experiences provided in the mathematics classroom. The practice standards are about doing and using mathematics to foster reasoning and sense-making.

The SMP are not intended to be a list of processes and proficiencies to be checked off for mastery or completion, as work on them is ongoing. Student performance may range from novice to expert based on the content, the activities, and the task in which the student is engaged.
