In 2010, the California State Board of Education (SBE) adopted California’s Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (Common Core State Standards), which describe the knowledge, skills, and abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening, conventions, knowledge of language, and vocabulary that all students need for college- and career-readiness across key academic content areas.

These next generation standards, along with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the Next Generation Science Standards, are part of a national movement to ensure K–12 students, including English learners, gain the necessary literacy and mathematical understanding and practices required in 21st-century higher education and workplace communities.

mejiaThe California ELD Standards start with the Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLDs) which provide an overview of stages of English language Development that English learners are expected to progress through as they gain increasing proficiency in English as a new language. The K-12 grade level standards list twelve standards in the area of “Interacting in Meaningful Ways” and seven standards under “Learning About How English Works.” Each standard has the following three proficiency levels listed: Emerging, Expanding and Bridging.

The four Appendices documents are listed after the grade level standards and are intended to be used in conjunction with each grade level ‘s standards. And lastly, the Glossary of Key Terms provides definitions of key terms used in the California English Language Development Standards and/or in related appendices. The definitions provided in the glossary are intended to be teacher-friendly and are specific to their use within the CA ELD Standards and related appendices.

With these new resources, California’s teachers of English learners are now more equipped to meet the linguistic needs of English learners.
