Negative Slope

negative slopeEquations have been graphed, slopes determined, and we discover something new. The line looks different than the others we have encountered. It's slanted down. Yes, we have a little something new for students to contend with-- a negative slope. A negative slope does indicate a decrease in one thing in relation to something else.

This "negative slope" concept is a bit of a challenge for Ms. England's students. As you watch the next video clip, think about the kinds of questions your own students might have with this idea.

Classroom Clip Reflection:

  • What types of questions does Ms. England ask to help this group understand the different components of the graph?
  • What do the students know and understand about negative and positive slope? What other question could be asked to find out what students know?
  • How does questioning support student thinking?
  • What are the implications for your work with your students?
